Ingredints for easy Arrabbiata sauce

You must be wondering what is the main difference between marinara sauce and arrabbiata sauce? As both the sauces use tomatoes as a base, arrabbiata sauce is a bit spicier including red chile pepper or red dried chili flakes. Arrabbiata sauce is usually simmered until aromatic and then served over pasta, meatballs, or pizza.

Arrabbiata sauce calls for 6 simple pantry staples and you can easily whip up this sauce in under 30 minutes or less!

  • Fresh garlic cloves
  • Onion (finely chopped)
  • Diced tomato
  • Crushed red pepper flakes
  • Fresh basil leaves and parsley
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

How to make the arrabbiata sauce

  • Heat olive oil in a saucepan over low to medium heat. Add crushed red pepper flakes and saute for about a minute and a half, then add chopped onions and saute until softened and translucent. Add minced garlic and saute until fragrant.
  • Now add tomatoes and stir properly to combine everything. Cook the sauce and break the diced tomatoes with a spatula or spoon (or you can use a masher) until the sauce hit a low simmer. Continue to cook the sauce and turn the flame to medium and cook for the next 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cook until the sauce thickens up and attain your desired consistency.
  •  Mix in fresh herbs (parsley or basil), salt, and crushed black pepper. Combine everything properly and taste the arrabbiata sauce and season with salt or pepper as per your preference.
  • Serve the spicy sauce immediately or let the sauce cool and then refrigerate it in an airtight container.

Arrabbiata Sauce Tips & Variations

  • Make sure to use a good quality extra virgin olive oil- this makes a huge difference in the overall flavor.
  • You can make a large batch of arrabbiata sauce as it will stay well in the refrigerator for about 2 to 3 weeks.
  • If you want your sauce less spicy, make sure to add red chili flacks in parts, you can start with 1 to 2 tablespoons and add later if you need.
  • If the sauce is very thick for you, you can easily thin it with water (recommended with starchy pasta water)- heat it in a saucepan or add the sauce to the pasta and then add water and mix everything properly.
  • Let the sauce simmer for at least 15 to 25 minutes or you can even go up to 40 minutes, as the sauce simmers the flavors starts to enhance a bit more.
  • The arrabbiata sauce is an excellent freezer-friendly pasta sauce recipe. you can store it in a freezer-friendly container for about 3 months and if you wish to store it in a fridge it will easily stay up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.
