What is Sofritas?
I think if you are here then you’ve tried the tofu sofritas at chipotle at least once and now wondering how can you make them at home! :P But if you don’t know what exactly sofritas is, I will break it down for you.
Basically, sofritas is a vegan and a vegetarian dish that chipotle launched which features tofu, roasted peppers, chipotle peppers, and other spices like cayenne and cumin. Mostly the taste and the flavor of these tofu sofritas are Mexican inspired which is somehow Lil bit spicy, but you can definitely make it as per your preference.
I love to serve my tofu sofritas in tacos but mostly in burrito bowls. I like to add some white or brown rice, black beans, charred or frozen corn, chopped veggies, and finally garnish the bowl with chipotle mayo!

Ingredients for spicy chipotle Sofritas bowl
- Tofu: Tofu is packed with plant-based protein and it’s a great meat-free substitution, I recommend using extra-firm tofu for the tofu sofritas recipe.
- Spices: this recipe calls for basic kitchen staples like smoked paprika, cumin powder, and chili powder.
- Tomato paste
- Olive oil: or you can use any vegetable oil
- Garlic: use fresh 4 to 5 garlic cloves
- Onion
- Bell pepper: Because I love to use bell pepper in any tofu recipe, it’s totally optional.
- Maple syrup or honey: Instead of refined sugar, maple syrup or honey makes tofu sofritas a bit healthier than alternatives.
- Chipotle peppers in adobo sauce: You can find them in the daily grocery stores, and typically it’s in the Latin American sections. It’s quite pocket-friendly and you can use this sauce in various other recipes also. It stays well in the fridge for almost 1 to 2 weeks.
- Crushed tomatoes: you can use crushed can tomatoes or simply blend 1 ½ ripe tomatoes and make them puree
- Soy sauce or tamari: for a gluten-free recipe, make sure to use certified gluten-free tamari.
How to make Spicy Chipotle Vegan Sofritas?
- Remove the tofu from the package and drain the excess liquid from it and press between paper towels to remove the remaining liquid, then cut the slab into large cubes and add to a food processor. Pulse until crumbled.
- Now, heat the olive oil in a pan over low to medium heat. Add chopped onion and garlic and saute for about 2 minutes or until the onion is softened and translucent.
- Add chopped bell pepper and cook for about the next 2 to 3 minutes. Then add crumbled tofu, cumin powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, and salt and stir to combine everything properly.
- Cook the tofu until it gets a little browned.
- Add chipotle peppers, crushed tomatoes, and maple syrup in a blender and pour the sauce into the pan along with tamari or soy sauce and stir the mixture until properly combined.
- Cook for another 8 to 10 minutes, let it simmer to allow the flavors to absorb or until the sauce gets fully combined with the tofu.
- Remove the pan from the heat and keep it aside.
- Serve in burritos, or bowls with white or brown rice, charred corn, black beans, and finish with a nice drizzle of lemon juice! Enjoy The Copycat Spicy Chipotle Sofritas at home!! :)
