Ingredients
- Chicken: Use boneless and skinless chicken breast. If you are going to use chicken thighs, just make sure to cook a little longer.
- Olive oil: vegetable or olive oil
- Honey or maple syrup: a little sweetness to balance out the teriyaki sauce. You can also substitute with brown sugar or maple syrup if you like.
- Low sodium soy sauce: If you cannot find low sodium soy sauce, use 2 ½ Tbsp std soy sauce with 1 tbsp water.
- Vinegar: You can use apple cider vinegar or rice wine vinegar if available, but plain white vinegar works fine, too.
- Sesame oil: To add a little bold flavor to the teriyaki sauce, You can also use unrefined peanut oil.
- Cornstarch or arrowroot: This helps thicken the sauce.
- Sesame seeds and green onions: For garnishing the Asian stir-fried chicken.
- Ginger and garlic: Fresh and finely chopped works great!
How to Make Teriyaki Chicken:
We’re not making this teriyaki chicken in the traditional style, so we are using a skillet instead of the grill.
- Whisk the sauce: The chicken cooks really quick, especially when it is cut into small pieces, so we need to make sure our sauce is ready when the chicken is. Homemade teriyaki sauce recipe.
- Cut and cook the chicken: cut the chicken breast into small bite pieces and heat oil in a medium skillet. Cook the chicken pieces in the skillet (giving space between the pieces) for about 3 to 4 minutes or until lightly browned on the bottom, and flip the chicken pieces
- Pour the homemade teriyaki sauce into the skillet once the chicken is just nearly done cooking through, and let the teriyaki sauce cook for about 4 to 5 minutes until it gets thickened.
- Homemade Teriyaki Chicken Recipe ready! Serve it warm over brown or white rice with steamed veggies (broccoli, beans, or carrot). And garnish it with chopped green onion and sesame seeds, and enjoy!

Can I make Teriyaki Chicken in the slow cooker?
Definitely!
Simply whisk the teriyaki sauce and pour it into the crockpot and the chicken pieces and cook on low for 2 hours.
How To Store Leftover Teriyaki Chicken?
If you’ve got some leftovers, store the chicken and rice in separate containers in the fridge for about 3 to 4 days. This will make sure the rice doesn’t get soggy.
