Why is it called Hasselback potatoes?
Hasselback potatoes are named after the Hasselbacken Hotel and Restaurant in Stockholm, Sweden, where they were first served in the 1940s.
The dish consists of slicing the potatoes nearly to the base yet still keeping the potato whole and then it is seasoned and baked, often with butter or other toppings.
This Hasselback potatoes air fryer recipe is even more delicious and better than the roasted version.
Ingredients
- Potatoes: You can use any potato variety for this recipe, Russet potato roasts amazingly but if you can’t find that, Yukon will do.
- Olive oil: I have used olive oil spray, avocado or sunflower oil are also great substitutes.
- Seasoning: I’ve used a savory blend of garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper with a twist of Italian seasonings. You can also make your own seasoning blend of cajun, ranch, or Italian according to your preference.
How to Cut the Perfect Hasselback Potatoes
The key to the perfect Hasselback potatoes is to ensure that you dont slice the potatoes all the way through, which may sound really difficult but it’s easy to cut.
Grab a few potatoes that are similar in size so they cook evenly. Wash them and dry them with a kitchen towel or paper.
Place the potato on a cutting board with one of the flat sides down and place the chopstick or skewer up along each of the long sides of the potato. Make sure they are tight against the bottom of the potato and the board. Doing this will keep you cutting the potato all the way while slicing it.
How To Make Air Fryer Hasselback Potato
- Prep the potatoes: wash and scrub the potatoes, and place the potatoes on a cutting board between two chopsticks. Start slicing the potato into ¼ inch slices (as thin as possible) but do not cut the potato all the way through, the chopsticks should prevent you from slicing all the way through. Repeat the same process with the remaining potatoes.
- Seasoning: In a small bowl combine the salt, pepper, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and olive oil, and stir until everything is combined properly.
- Brush: Brush the potatoes with a generous amount of the mixture and place them in the air fryer basket.
- Air fryer the Hasselback potato: Now cook the potatoes at 180°c or 360°F for 15 to 20 minutes or until fork tender.
How Long to Air Fry Hasselback Potatoes
Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for at least 5 minutes. Prep your potatoes place them in the air fryer and cook for about 15 to 20 minutes or until fork tender. Do not forget to shake the basket during cooking to ensure even cooking and browning.
The exact cooking time may vary depending on the size and thickness of your potatoes, so it’s always a good idea to check them periodically as they cook.
Once they are done, remove the potatoes from the air fryer and serve immediately, garnished with fresh herbs or toppings of your choice.
Storage and Reheating
Keep any remaining potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a maximum of three days.
To reheat the air fryer Hasselback potatoes to get the crispy texture, arrange your leftovers in a single layer inside your air fryer. Air fryer them to 350°F and let them cook for approximately 3-4 minutes, adjusting the time based on your desired level of crispiness.
